Restorative-driven | 3D Virtual Planning | Guided Implant Placement

Recent developments in digital technology are rapidly changing the way we approach planning and treating patients with dental implant-supported restorations. A restorative-driven approach to the planning and surgical phases of implant dentistry is critical to ensure a predictable outcome.

This is routinely derived through the use of templates and guides to ensure optimal implant positioning. The use of available technology has further enhanced the use of conventional surgical templates and guides, and has more recently evolved to include 3D planning software and 3D printed surgical guides and templates. Incorporating this available technology into everyday implant dentistry allows us to provide optimal implant positioning and restoration design, which will facilitate maintenance and reduce the risk of complications for our patients.

Learning Objectives

  • Describe the concept of Restorative Guided Implant Placement
  • Discuss the benefits of Guided Implant Surgery
  • Explain the digital work flow and how to incorporate a restorative-driven approach regardless of the treatment planning pathway
  • Learn how to incorporate CBCT scans and 3D Planning software in implant dentistry
  • Demonstrate the entire process of 3D CBCT acquisition, data set transfer, nerve detection, data segmentation and implant placement for prosthetic-driven implant planning with coDiagnostiX implant planning software (hands-on-laptop exercise)
  • Demonstrate the process of guided sleeve position, digital surgical guide design and fabrication (hands-on-laptop exercise)
  • Discuss the protocol for the Straumann Guided Surgery (SGS) system
  • Understand the process of Stereolithography in the fabrication of surgical templates and the various indications and designs available
  • Case planning and Guided Surgery hands-on with the Straumann Guided Surgical system
